compass is an instrument used to point out the north pole of the earth.the container protects the compass needle from these external unbalanced forces so as to stabilize the needle pointer, in turns determining the right north direction

Compass is an instrument to point out the north pole direction of earth. The compass itself is a magnet and aligns itself within the earths magnetic field.
The strength of earths magnetic field is approximately about .5 gauss, that is meagre in comparison with an average Ferro magnet's strength ranging from 500 to 1000 gauss.
So the compass needle of whatever magnetic strength is 'loosely' bound or aligned in the earths weak magnetic field. A slight external disturbance, be it from surrounding atmospheric forces or electro magnetic forces, mis-aligns the field synchronism between that of earth and the compass. Thereby failing its very purpose!
The container protects the compass needle from these external unbalanced forces so as to stabilise the needle pointer, in turns determining the right north direction. Some compass containers are also equipped with oil or water based movement damping.
Besides, the container improves the instruments aesthetics.
