A layer of zinc is coated over iron articles so as to protect it from rusting. When Zinc reacts with atmospheric oxygen it develops a layer of zinc oxide. This zinc oxide protects the layer of zinc as well as the iron object from corrosion.

HI !
Iron (Fe) when comes in contact with air and moisture, gets covered with a brown flaky substance called rust. This process is called rusting. It makes iron lose its hardness and destroys it. Hence,to prevent rusting,a layer of zinc is coated over iron , as a barrier , which prevents iron from coming in contact with moisture and air. Applying a coat of zinc over iron is called galvanization.
