a person is less hurt or negligebily hurt because sponge contains air pores which helps us. when we fall on spongy surface the air present in the surface removed by sponge so that we r less hurt.

Because we know that spongy is a soft surface, and sponge have some minute holes in it which air has been trapped and again we are able to compress it. Hence a person doesn't fell hurt when he falls on if.
