Longitudinal waves are the waves which propagate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.Sound travel in this manner and hence sound wave called a longitudinal wave

A sound wave known a longitudinal wave because the particles of the medium through which the sound is transported vibrate parallel to the direction of that sound wave move.
