why is a sponge compressible even though it is a solid???

because gas particle are present in its pores which come out on applying pressure

a sponge is a solid but it can be compressed because they have tiny pores or holes in them occupied with air particles, when we press the sponge the air particles are expelled out from the pores making it highly compressible.,...........
