A voltmeter likely to burn out if connected in series by the following reasons:

1) The resistance of the voltmeter is very high and it is generally used to measure the potential difference between two points so connected in parallel.

2) If we connect the voltmeter in series then there will be no current in the circuit which develops the heat energy in the circuit so there will be a high chance for the voltmeter to burn.
