Active transport requires energy because it is not a passive process. The molecule has to go against the concentration gradient. Hence it requires energy to be carried by the carrier proteins......

active transport by which dissolved particles move across a cell membrane from a region of the higher concentration to a region of their lower concentration.in active transport particles move against the concentration gradient and therefore require an input of energy .
