Agriculture is the key occupation in India. 2/3 of India’s populace depends on agriculture indirectly/directly.

Agriculture is the backbone of our nation and is vital not only from an economic viewpoint and has a deep-rooted impact on our political, cultural and social life.

For the development of our industries, agriculture plays an active role. It provides crucial raw materials to several industries such as cotton textiles, sugar, jute, oil, vegetables, rubber, and cigarettes, and so on.  
• Excise duty on agricultural products, land revenue, and taxes on production/sale of agricultural machinery forms a good part of govt.’s revenue sources.  
• Agriculture facilitates capital formation. Excess income from agriculture production is invested in other sources such as shares, banks, and so on. The use of harvesters and tractors increase the formation of capital.  
• Agriculture is a source of livelihood and is the major food source, fodder and fuel but has become a way of life. Fairs, customs, and festivals are impacted by agriculture.  
• Progress of tared, transport and industry is not possible sans advancement of agriculture. Prices’ stability depends on agriculture development. Adequate food grain production brings stability in food grain prices. This, in turn, brings stability in living cost and wages, as well. Hence, increased agricultural production maintains the price stable.  
• Foreign trade is related to agriculture. We export tobacco, tea, coffee, and spices. Other agricultural exports comprise textiles, cotton, sugar, and jute goods. Therefore the total share of agricultural exports has risen considerably.
