Aluminium oxide is an amphoteric oxide because it reacts both with acids (in dilute condition) and alkalis(conc) to give salt and water.

For example:

Al2O3 + HCl ------> AlCl3 + H2O
Al2O3 + H2SO4 -------> Al2(SO4)3 + H2O
Al2O3 + NaOH + H2O --------> NaAlO2 + H2O
Al2O3 + KOH + H2O ------> KAlO2 + H2O
