This question is based on the play 'The Dear Departed' by Stanley Houghton.
Amelia Slater is very edgy and nervous in the beginning of the play because her father had died. She wanted to keep his bureau for herself as she was quite fond of it. She was in the middle of shifting it downstairs so that she could tell her sister Elizabeth that he had given it to them before dying.
She was also worried that the Jordan family might arrive before she had completed the task of shifting it and try to claim the bureau for themselves.
