Amonia is a basic gas.

In the fountain, the colour of the solution appears blue.

This is because amonia, being a basic gas ,has a tendency to turn litmus blue.

It is used because of its basic nature to demonstrate that it is highly soluble in water. In addition a similar gas is HCl.

Hope this helps :)
