Why is ammonium nitrite not heated directly to produce nitrogen?

Ammonium nitrite is very unstable and will happily decompose to give N2 if you look at it funny. Ammonium nitrate does not give N2 when heated. You should be careful doing this, not least because you may have the anti-terrorism authorities knocking on your door.
