The gases like argon and nitrogen do not react with the hot tungsten filament and hence prolong the life of the filament of the electric bulb .

It is because If air is filled in an electric bulb then extremely hot tungusten filament would burn quickly in the oxygen of air. argon or nitrogen do not react with the hot tungusten filament and hence prolong the life of filament.
