why is Archimedes principle applicable only for liquid ?

It is not much applicable for gas because gases can be compressed highly and for solids you know better....

liquids only occupy space in the container and when a heavy mass is dipped the extra volume is displaced.....but in case of gases the gas will spread and there is no set volume for a gas
