Why is Ashoka introduce dhamma?

Ashoka wanted people of his Kingdom to follow the principles of Dhamma namely, living together in harmony, speaking the truth, respecting other religions, follow ahimsa showing charity and kindness to other human beings, and obey and respecting elders.
