why is atomic mass of chlorine taken as 35.5 u and not a whole number like 35u or 36 u?

The answer to why chlorine has anatomic weight of 35.5 not 35 is because of something called isotopes. Isotopes are atoms with the samenumber of protons (in the case ofchlorine that means 17 protons) but different numbers of neutrons.
