ATP is an energy currency for both endergonic and exergonic reactions. When the phosphate bond breaks and ATP converts to ADP, it releases energy. The energy released is taken up by cells to perform their function.

When ADP converts to AMP, more energy released. Hence, the more the bonds in a molecule, the more potential energy it holds.
