Beryllium hydroxide[Be(OH)2 ] is a compound which is amphoteric in nature and therefore reacts with both an acid and a base. However, magnesium hydroxide[ Mg(OH)2 ] is basic in nature and so it does not react with a base.

Therefore, Beryllium hydroxide reacts with Sodium hydroxide( NaOH) which is a base and dissolves in it, producing a colourless solution of Sodium tetrahydroxoberyllate but Magnesium hydroxide does not dissolve in it.

Because Mg(OH)2 is a base and sodium hydroxide is also a base and bases do not react with acids.
