Blood group should be identified before transfusion. It should be done even when the serum is transfused. Though serum is free of cells when taken from the donor, it can show agglutination when it is transfused into recipient body. This is because recipient;s blood will have the cells which are responsible for antigen antibody reaction.

By removing blood platelates and blood corpuscles from blood and remaining part is called serum. So it has not any type of antigens or antibody. And therefore there is not requirement of blood groop identification while transfusing serum.
