Why is chemical equilibrium macroscopically static?

Equilibrium is microscopically dynamic but macroscopically static. It means that microscopically the reaction always goes on, i.e, the forward and backward reaction always goes on but they occur at equal rate. So macroscopically the concentration of reactants and products stay same at equilibrium.
