Chilika Lake is called a lagoon because it is a shallow body of brackish water separated from a larger body of water.

It is the largest coastal lagoon in India covering almost 1100 kms.

It is located near Puri, Ganjam and Khurda cities in the state of Odisha.

Lagoon is a narrow strech of water body which is seperated from the main stream. The Chilika lake is one of the most famous lagoons along with the Pulicat. Lagoons are formed due to extreme depositions of sand and silt and seperated from the main stream. Chilika lake is formed in the same way. Due to the extreme depositions by the Bay of Bengal, it was seperated from the main sea and thus known as a lagoon.
