Dear Student,

◆ Chlorophyll-a is called essential pigment because -

  • Chlorophyll is the most green-colored pigment present in the plant.
  • It is available in two forms chlorophyll a & chlorophyll b.
  • It absorbs light energy from sun and thus is useful for photosynthesis in plants.
  • Thus it is considered to be essential (primary) pigment.

# Extra information -

  • A plant pigment is any type of colored substance produced by a plant.
  • Some other imp pigments include carotenoids, anthocyanins, xanthophylls, etc.

Thanks dear. Hope this helps you...
