Chrome is decorative, relatively hard to scratch and can withstand cleaning agents for hygiene. That is why it is on taps and other fittings which are exposed to a similar environment.

Chrome plating does a good job of isolating the underlying metal against corrosion from exposure to water and other substances, and provides a hard, scratch-resistant surface that is easy to clean.
