Many years ago Davanagere district use to grow more cotton than any other district in Karnataka and it had more than 20 cotton mills at that time. So it was called as Manchester of Karnataka. Now only two mills are left in Davanagere. Due to worker's protest, garments industries etc all the mills are closed now.

Due to growth of cotton is very high in this city and it had 20 cotton miles so.
It is called Manchester of karnataka
