David was sent to the Salem House by his stepfather Mr. Murdstone. David had bitten Mr. Murdstone's hand in his panic situation when Mr. Murdstone had whipped David with a switch. Mr. Murdstone used his bite as an excuse to send David away to the boarding school. The Salem House was a school run by Mr. Creakle who had been warned previously that David is a very bad and mischievous kid.
