Why is democracy preferred as the better form of government than dictatorship

In a country ruled by a dictatorship government, dictator can do anything he wants without any objection.sometimes situation for people opposing the dictator or his act can be very harmful.he can easily kill or toture them. where as in democracy no one has the power to behave like this with the countrymens.however if the dictator is good he can serve the country and citizens better than any democratic government.
