The larger area of flat shoe exerts less pressure as compared to the pencil-heeled shoe. Due to greater pressure the sand underpencil-heeled shoe sinks greater in sand and therefore it is difficult to walk with a pencil-heeled shoe on sand. This happens because Pressure is inversely proportional to area, So if area will increase pressure will increase and if area will decrease pressure will decrease.

Depression i.e pressure exerted by flat shoes on soft sand is less as it covers more surface area ..whereas in heels the surface area decreases so the pressure exerted by heel shoes is more on the sand which makes more depression..
