Diffusion is a slow process and oxygen is not able to reach the innermost cells of complex organisms as they are not directly in contact with the environment. Diffusion is slow because the oxygen is transferred on the basis of concentrations at different places, and with this speed the high demand of oxygen at various points in the body at a time are not fulfilled by diffusion. Hence it is not a viable option for multicellular or complex organisms for transport of oxygen.
