More reactive metals i.e, alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are usually extracted by electrolysis of their fused salts because in electrolytic reduction, by aplying external potential from outside soure, reduction can be brought easily. Further, more reactive metals have more affinity with oxygen than that of carbon. That's why electrolytic reduction is preferred over the chemical reduction.
