Refraction through a glass slab. So, theincident ray is parallel to the emergent ray but it is laterally displaced from it. Question: A rayof light travelling in air falls on the surface of a transparent glass slab. ... Find the angle made by the refracted ray with the normal within the slab.

The emergent ray and incident ray is not always parallel.

In a prism, the emergent ray and incident is never parallel! (single prism only)

However, in a rectangular glass slab, the incident ray and emergent ray is parallel due to the lateral shift of the light rays when it goes from air to glass and back to air again.
