Why is energy necessary to counteract the diffusion of Na+ and K+ ions across the plasma membrane of a neuron?

energy is required for the diffusion of Na+ and K+ in neuron. this is required becuase the number of sodium ions is already more than the number of sodium ions inside the axon. thus we need to tranfer sodium and potassium ions against the concentration gradient which needs the requirement of ATP.
