Food security is a condition related to the supply of food, and individuals' access to it. Attaining food security is a matter of prime importance for India where more than a third of its population is estimated to be absolutely poor, and as many as one half of its children have suffered from malnourishment over the last three decades.Food security is applied in case the country lacks food grains due to some natural calamity and for the poor who are unable to buy food at market price due to their poverty.Also food security plays a major role in supplying other country or state which lacks food grains due to natural calamity or other possible reasons.

Following points state need of food security in India
(i) The poorest section of the society might be food insecure most of the times while persons above the poverty line might also be food insecure during natural calamities.
(ii) During natural calamities like drought, earthquake, flood, tsunami, etc total production of food grains decreases. It creates a shortage of food and the prices go up. At the high prices, some people can not afford to buy food. Thus, it can be concluded that food security is essential in India.
