Because only 5% of the total polythene bags in India are recycled every year.

Most of the polythene bags in India are not recycled or reused. That makes a damage to the environment.

It's also harmful for sea turtle like animals. Report says that Sea turtle found polythene bags in a sea, they feel that they are jelly fish.
They eat those polythene bags and choked up.

So in this way polythene bags are causing damage to the environment and also to the natural food chain.

Alternatives of polythene bags are :

Canvas bags,
Home made bags,
cotton bags,
calico bags,
jute bags. etc.

Hope it's useful.

All the best.

Answer :-

The reasons behind the imposition of ban on the use of polythene bags are as follows :-

  • Polythene is non-biodegradable and thus, is a cause for the widespread pollution in the country.

  • Polythene bags on improper disposal into drains and gutters, lead to the blockage of sewerage systems.

  • Polythene on being burnt, gives out a high amount of poisonous gases which further aggravate the phenomenon of air pollution.

Some alternatives to the use of polythene bags which can improve the condition of our environment are as follows :-

  • Jute, Cotton and Paper are biodegradable in nature and thus bags made up of these materials can be easily decomposed after being disposed.

  • Such bags can used for a long period of time. Thus, there is no need of buying new bags again and again.
