hcl (hydrochloric acid )is present in stomach for action of enzyme pepsin which digests proteins .It creates acidic conditions in stomach which activates pepsin and digests proteins.Alongwith it mucus is present to protect inner surface of stomach from hcl's action.hope it helps.
