Why is heat absorbed during addition of electron in O-?

When an electron is absorbed, it is placed in a higher orbit which is free in Oxygen atom.   The work done in placing the electron in the orbit  is the energy absorbed.
 
  The bond between molecules of Oxygen in O2  are broken and new bonds are formed.  So that requires energy.
