The reason why heredity is so important because, we get our traits from mom and dad. The organisms get the traits from moms egg, and dads sperm. The egg and sperm each carry 23 Chromosomes, which equals to 46 Chromosomes total. Each of the Chromosomes holds DNA, and the DNA is a gene, which gives us our traits. The genes pairs up, one from mom, and dad. Each of the gene pair gives us our trait. A gene can be dominant, which is strong, or recessive, which is weak. If mom and/or dad give the strong gene, then the dominant trait will show. If mom and dad give the strong gene, then the recessive triat will show.
When a trait changes, it is called mutation. Some causes of the mutation is because of Chemicals, Viruses, or Radiation.
For example, the color of our eyes. If moms eye color is brown, and dads eye color is blue. Your eye color would most likely be brown, because brown is more of a dominant color than blue.
