interest is to convert agalvanometer to voltmeter to measure the potential difference across any component in a circuit. This can be done byadding a suitable high resistancein series with galvanometer. When high resistance is connect in series with the galvanometer, very negligible current flow through it.

The high resistance is added in series with a galvanometer because it controls the current and confine the deflection in the range before getting the null point. if not so then the excessive heat generated may melt the insulation of galvanometer coil.
