Covalent bonds are called as directional bonds ; because the covalent bond arises due to electrostatic attraction between the nuclear core and shared electron pairs. These electrons are localized because they are confirmed, between the adjacent cations. In these, bonds the orbitals which are involved in bonding have fixed direction.

Ex: CH4

ionic bond, which is called as nondirectional , because these bonds are arised due to electrostatic attraction betweencations and anions and the cations and anions are positive and negative respectively in all directions and everywhere in the bond. So, the ions may attract each other in any direction which makes the ionic bonds asnon-directional

Ex: Na+Cl- => NaCl

s-p overlapping: Overlap between half-filled s-orbitals of one atom and half-filled p-orbitals of another atom. Hence, they form bonds in a particular direction. Therefore, covalent bonds are directional in nature. ... Hence, ionic bonds are non-directional in nature.
