Because it helps the increase the haemoglobin of blood . The function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen . As we know that athletes run a lot which may result in muscle cramps due to formation of lactic acid which is due to anaerobic respiration . So if an athlete takes iron then there will be no anaerobic respiration at all because the oxygen will be carried to all parts of body thus causes aerobic respiration

Iron is an essential mineral found in every cell of the body. Its main role is to transport oxygen in the blood to the tissues. Iron ensures that our muscles are working properly. It also helps the body convert carbohydrates into energy during exercise. While the body is recovering from strenuous exercise, iron helps produce new cells, proteins, and hormones that make us stronger.
Nutritional advice for female athletes is a growing area of interest, and indeed concern, for dieticians and sports nutritionists. Much of the concern is centred on the various subclinical eating disorders. However, a rather more subtle, yet no less important issue arises when one considers the often limited dietary intake by female athletes of two specific minerals -namely iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca) especially when heavy training loads are undertaken.
