Why is Iron rendered passive with fuming nitric acid ?

Why is tap water not used to prepare a solution of silver nitrate in the lab ?

This is because of the formation of reddish brown layer of iron oxide which prevents its further reaction with the acid.

Silver ions are reactive with some common ions in tap water, such as chloride and sulfate. If these are present in the water, the silver ion will combine with them and precipitate out of solution.
