The annual average rainfall in India is about 120 cm, i.e. slightly more than the global mean of 99 cm but still due to improper management and pollution , we are not able to use that water and it goes wasted by draining into saline oceans . Irrigation in india is very important because
1. Indian monsoons are highly erratic . Depending on rain might not yield better crop results .
2. Rice which is grown both as a commercial and staple crop requires a lot of water .
3. HYV seeds which have been introduced , require a lot of irrigation .
4. Indian economy is an agrarian economy , thus irrigation is necessary to produce good quality yields.
