why is it better to use a divider than a ruler while measuring the length of a line segment

I think a ruler is better if we want correct measurement. but for comparison divider is good...

Because a divider has points at each end, they can be placed exactly at the ends of the segment you want to measure. Then, being careful not to disturb the reading, place one point exactly on the “1” line on a good quality rule and read the measurement at the other point, and subtract one inch (or cm, if it’s metric) to obtain the result.

To understand why this is the more accurate method, lay the rule against the line using your eyeball to line it up, then move your head back and forth sideways and see what parallax does to your observation.

The points on the divider take out the guesswork on both sides of the problem, the observation, and the transfer of that observation to the rule.
