Why is it difficult to define the nation? How are nation and state related in modern society?

Nation—an entity difficult to define. (i) Many nations are founded on the basis of shared religion, language, ethnicity, history or regional culture but it is difficult to say that each nation will possess all these constituents. Eg. ... Here is found cultural diversity, ethnic diversity and diverse religions.

It is difficult to define a nation because nation can be formed or found on the basis of religion, culture, language that is shared between people living in that nation. But India has varied religions, languages and cultures. Also, there are many  languages, or religions that are shared across nations, but they are not one nation. So, it is difficult to define a nation.

Relationship between nation and state in a modern society is that nation can acquire a state of its own. It is possible that people living in a nation are of a different nation. Like people of Jamaica also live outside Jamaica. Democracy is the key for formation of a state in today’s world.
