Friction is required to attain the ignition temperature of the red phosphorus on the matchstick. Smooth surfaces do not provide much friction, therefore , ignition temperature cannot be attained by striking the matchstick on a smooth surface.

I hope this will help you friend.

No heat; no friction

Explanation:

Friction is a phenomenon which resists motion when an object is rubbed against another. So friction has instances where it is desired and instances where it is not desired.

In cases where friction helps, it becomes desirable. Like when drawing, walking, driving or picking up fallen objects or lighting a matchstick. The friction between the match head and the rough surface helps light the matchstick. A smooth surface will not raise the temperature to light the phosphorus on the matchstick. So a rough surface is essential.
