It is easier to perform skating on snow because there is less friction between both the surfaces and it is more maneuverable for the skater. The law of thermodynamics can be applied in this case which makes movement easy. Also, a film of water is apparently existing on the layer of snow that enhances faster and easier movement without slipping.

the goal of downhill ski racer is speed.put another way, every competitor wants to convert as much potential energy as possible into kinetic energy and along with it velocity.that  means minimizing the action of external force whose work on the skier would leach energy from this conversion;namely, the grab of surface friction and pushback of air resistance. skiers wax their skies so they glide over the snow. as the skiers reaches down nearly all potential energy has been converted into kinetic energy now, the skiers turns the skies sideways to the slope in as kidding motion that is it is easier to perform skating in snow
