Microorganisms living in a compost pile need enough moisture to survive. Water is the key element that helps transports substances within the compost pile and makes the nutrients in organic material accessible to the microbes

Turning is the most common and important process when composting is done in stacks.

It is important to turn the compost stack for the following reasons.

  • To aerate the compost to promote the growth of aerobic microbes in the compost.
  • To maintain high temperatures.
  • To control fly breeding.

Frequency of turning depends mainly on the moisture content and type of material used.

A good rule of thumb is to turn the compost pile every three to seven days. As the compost matures, turning can be performed less frequently.

Hand turning is most commonly done for small garden operations, while mechanical turning or static piles with a forced air system is implemented in large-scale operations.
