This kind of urbanisation was not a good thing. City people often lived in cramped, overcrowded housing with poor sanitation and disease and crime multiplied. Workers faced harsh conditions both at home and work place. People laboured for long hours with low wages in dangerous conditions with no job security. That is why the government needed to act and enact laws to improve working conditions
