Ans. Excretion, sweating and breathing makes us loose about 2-3 litres of water everyday. Hence, it is necessary to drink 1.5 litres of water everyday. It is made by drinking water and other liquids and the rest comes from food.

Water is needed for many vital functions of the body.

1. All the chemical reactions in the body, like digestion, occur in the dissolved or solution state.

2. Water helps to carry digested food around the body.

3. It also carries wastes, which are thrown out of the body in the form of sweat and urine. As a constituent of blood, it helps carry chemicals and gases throughout the body.

4. Water also helps to regulate the body temperature through the process of sweating.

Vegetables contain a lot of water. We can get a fair idea of the water content of vegetables by baking them or letting them dry in the sun. The following shows an experiment of the water content in vegetables:

Slice a couple of potatoes into wafers, weigh them and dry them in the sun until they become brittle. Then weigh them again and note the difference in weight.
