It is necessary in mammals and birds to separate oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood because this makes their circulatory system more efficient and helps in maintaining constant body temperature.

Answer:
- Oxygenated blood will carry oxygen while deoxygenated blood will carry carbon dioxide.
- Mixing of these will make the internal environment acidic and there will become more CO2 concentration that will cause harmful effect to the kidney and lungs because when cleaned by nephrons in kidneys is given to lungs for oxygenation and thus continues the cycle.
- So, the system called double circulation comes to rescue where blood flows through heart two times that is once when it is oxygenated and when once it is deoxygenated.
