It necessary to use acetic acid and not sulphuric acid for acidification of sodium extract for testing sulphur by lead acetate test because sulphuric acid will react with lead acetate to form a white precipitate of lead sulphate.

This white precipitate of lead sulphate will interfere in the test of sulphur. If acetic acid is used it will not interfere in the test of sulphur.

Chemical reaction :

Pb(CH3COO)2 + H2SO4 → PbSO4↓ + 2CH3COOH

Answer:

It is necessary to use acetic acid and not sulphuric acid for acidification of sodium extract for testing because Sulphuric acid react with lead acetate and form a white precipitate as product.

The white precipitate is lead

and interfere in reaction by not providing desires result.

Reaction is as follows :-

Pb(CH3COO)2 + H2So4 ===> PbSo4 + 2CH3COOH

PbSo4 is precipitate!
